Myanmar experienced a small but noticeable tremor on Monday, October 6, 2025, the National Center for Seismology (NCS) reported. The quake measured a magnitude of 3.6 and sank 73 kilometres below the surface at 26.68 N latitude and 95.92 E longitude. The NCS shared the details on X (formerly Twitter), adding the exact timing and depth.
Earlier this month the country saw a few other mild quakes. On Sunday, an earthquake of magnitude 3.7 struck at 88 km depth in the same region, while the 3.3‑magnitude shock on October 3 registered a depth of 90 km. All three events were recorded by the same monitoring agency and posted with clear coordinates so residents could check the exact location.
Myanmar sits on a complex tectonic crossroads: the Indian, Eurasian, Sunda, and Burma plates clash and shift. A long transform fault, the 1,400‑kilometre Sagaing Fault, runs north‑south through the country connecting the Andaman spreading centre to the collision zone in the north. Because of this geology, the cities of Sagaing, Mandalay, Bago and Yangon—home to nearly half of the nation’s people—remain at high seismic risk.
The recent strong earthquakes in March 2025, with magnitudes 7.7 and 6.4, already left thousands displaced. The World Health Organization warned that these events could spark outbreaks of tuberculosis, HIV, and water‑borne diseases in affected communities. Yangon, though a bit farther from the main fault line, still faces danger, reminding us that even large cities are not safe from the powerful forces beneath the earth.
