Bengaluru residents, get ready for a short hiccup in your Cauvery water supply. Starting today, September 15, the Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) is shutting down key pumping stations for emergency maintenance. This means no fresh Cauvery water in many parts of Greater Bengaluru for three days—until September 17.
BWSSB Chairman Dr. V Ram Prasath Manohar explained that the work is crucial to keep the Cauvery water supply project running smoothly. “We’re doing this to boost the long-term efficiency of our pumping stations and major pipelines,” he said. Without it, supplying uninterrupted drinking water to the city could become a bigger problem down the line.
The shutdown schedule is precise: Cauvery Stage V pumping stations will be off for a full 60 hours, from 1 am on September 15 to 1 pm on September 17. Meanwhile, Stages I, II, III, and IV (both phases) will pause for 24 hours, from 6 am on September 16 to 6 am on September 17. This will affect water distribution across various Bengaluru areas, so expect lower supply or none at all during these times.
Dr. Manohar urged everyone relying on Cauvery water to stock up now. “Please store enough water for your daily needs as a precaution,” he advised. It’s a simple step to avoid any hassle during the Bengaluru water disruption.
In other positive news for the region, Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar recently shared plans to extend Cauvery drinking water to 250 villages in Kanakapura taluk. Speaking at a Janaspandana programme in Kodihalli, he said, “We’re pumping Cauvery water from near Sangama to these villages. The project to fill the taluk’s tanks has already started.”
Shivakumar added that water from the Shimsha river is reaching Sathanur Hobli, while Arkavathi water is filling tanks in Kasaba Hobli. Even Hosadurga areas will get a boost from Cauvery sources. These efforts show Karnataka’s push for better water access in rural spots, tying into the bigger picture of reliable Cauvery water supply across the state.
