Kolkata civic body issues 14-day deadline to Durga Puja committees to remove mandap structures from city parks
Kolkata’s civic body, the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC), has rolled out a new rule to keep city parks open for everyone after Durga Puja festivities. Starting this year, puja committees must clear out their mandaps from parks within 14 days of idol immersion, or face strict action.
A KMC official explained that this condition comes right when they grant permission for using parks as puja venues. The move addresses long-standing issues where parks stay shut for weeks or even a month post-puja, leaving locals frustrated.
Over the years, residents have flooded KMC with complaints about not being able to access these green spaces. Elderly folks miss their morning and evening walks, while kids can’t play because bamboo structures block everything. It’s a big hassle for daily life in Kolkata neighborhoods.
TMC MLA and KMC’s Mayor-in-Council for Gardens, Debasish Kumar, stepped in to fix this. He issued a verbal order making it crystal clear: dismantle Durga Puja pandals by 14 days after Vijaya Dashami. “Parks belong to the people,” Kumar said. “We’re allowing pujas there, but you have to return them on time. This year, we’ll crack down hard on violators.”
Kumar also pointed out the ripple effect on other events. With Kali Puja coming up soon after Durga Puja, leftover mandaps could mess up preparations in those parks. That’s why the two-week deadline makes sense, he added.
Popular spots like Jagat Mukherjee Park, Kumartuli Park, Deshapriya Park, Khidirpur 25 Palli, Santosh Mitra Square, Pratapaditya Road Trikon Park, and Jatin Das Park often host these grand Durga Puja celebrations. Now, with this Durga Puja park rule in place, Kolkata residents can look forward to quicker access to their favorite hangouts after the festivities end.
