Mumbai’s cricket icon Sachin Tendulkar stepped into the spotlight on Monday, cutting the ribbon to officially reopen the revamped Shivaji Park Gymkhana. Fans packed the historic grounds in Shivaji Park, cheering loudly for the Bharat Ratna awardee as he celebrated this big moment in the heart of Marathi culture and sports.
The energy at the iconic Mumbai venue buzzed with excitement. Tendulkar, often called the Master Blaster, shared fond memories during his speech to the crowd and media. “I spent my childhood here,” he said. “We’d come for Vada Pav, but now this gymkhana stands ready, thanks to so many people. Raj Thackeray played a key role—he helped secure permissions and even shaped its design.”
He urged young players to make the most of the space. “The Shivaji Park Gymkhana has begun its first innings,” Tendulkar added. “I hope boys and girls use these facilities, train hard, and bring pride to the gymkhana, Mumbai, and all of India. That’s my wish as a cricketer.”
Joining Tendulkar were prominent figures like Shiv Sena UBT leader Milind Narvekar, Maharashtra Navnirman Sena chief Raj Thackeray, Mahesh Sawant, and other local leaders. It’s a spot close to Tendulkar’s heart—this is where he kicked off his cricket journey under legendary coach Ramakant Achrekar.
After about 18 months of work, the Shivaji Park Gymkhana looks fresh and modern. Renovators refreshed the interiors with green and beige tones, blending contemporary vibes with its rich heritage. One exciting upgrade? The launch of a women’s cricket team to boost the rising popularity of women’s cricket in India. The gymkhana now offers dedicated changing rooms and restrooms for female players, especially those in Mumbai Cricket Association tournaments, making it easier for them to shine.
