Aggressive posturing during Op Sindoor kept Pak Navy locked in ports, says Indian Naval Chief

New Delhi – On Tuesday, Admiral Dinesh K. Tripathi, the head of the Indian Navy, explained that the bold display during Operation Sindoor in May forced the Pakistan Navy to remain docked along the Makran coast and avoid the open waters. Speaking ahead of Navy Day festivities, he said the service has kept readiness levels high for the past seven to eight months, especially in the western Arabian Sea, as tensions with Pakistan flare up. He didn’t reveal the specifics of the operation, noting that it is still active and many details can’t be released publicly for obvious reasons.

The Admiral highlighted that the rapid deployment of naval units was crucial to the outcome. “We reaffirmed our commitment, readiness, capability and deterrence,” he said. “The decisive posture and swift action during Operation Sindoor – including the forward deployment of a carrier battle group into the northern Arabian Sea – kept the Pakistan Navy confined to its ports or the Makran coast, and they never ventured out.”

Tripathi added that the operation has imposed financial pressure on Pakistan, with many merchant vessels avoiding its ports after the hostilities, leading to higher insurance premiums for ships traveling there. He also pointed out the Navy’s active response to new maritime threats, such as the Houthis in the Red Sea. In the region, 40 capital ships currently protect vital shipping lanes, safeguarding cargo worth roughly $5.6 billion.

Indian warships have detained 52 pirates in recent missions and have maintained an uninterrupted presence in the Gulf of Aden since 2008, deploying 138 warships and escorting nearly 7,800 merchant vessels. At present, 40 ships are on anti‑piracy duty, and the Navy has rescued 520 people at sea over the past year.
