Rahul Gandhi is part of global alliance aiming to tarnish India’s image: BJP

New Delhi, Dec 27 (IANS) – The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) took a hard line against Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi on Saturday, accusing him of engaging in “anti‑India” activities during a recent trip to Germany and questioning why he attended a meeting of the Global Progressive Alliance, a group the BJP says operates against Indian interests.

During a press briefing at the party’s headquarters in New Delhi, BJP National Spokesman Sudhanshu Trivedi warned that the Global Progressive Alliance “is a network of forces inimical to the country’s interest” and that it is tied to the network of U.S. billionaire and philanthropist George Soros. He said that Soros’s Open Society Foundation, which funds the Central European University, is suspected of political interference abroad.

Trivedi urged a probe into Gandhi’s overseas contacts, noting that the opposition leader had met Cornelia Woll— a member of the praesidium of the Central European University—while on the same tour. “During the same yatra, as you already know, Rahul Gandhi met Cornelia Woll from the praesidium of Central European University, which is funded by George Soros’ Open Society Foundation,” he said.

Highlighting a broader alleged network, Trivedi pointed to former adviser Sam Pitrōda and said, “When Sam Pitrōda is asked about the Global Progressive Alliance’s connection with the Congress, he himself reveals that Rahul Gandhi is part of its praesidium and that Sam Pitrōda is a member. This means Rahul Gandhi holds a leadership position while Sam Pitrōda is a member,” he added.

He pressed the Congress to clarify its claims of a 110‑country “democratic alliance,” adding, “Now I want a clear answer from the Congress party about the 110 countries that you claim form a democratic alliance. There are around 57 Muslim countries where there is no vibrant or consistent democracy; they are either theocratic states or fragile democracies. Around 30‑40 countries are still monarchies, and there are also many countries under dictatorial regimes.”

Trivedi asked, “Is Rahul Gandhi running an international narrative against India?” and argued that the opposition leader routinely travels abroad, making statements that the BJP says are hostile to India.

The spokesperson concluded that Gandhi’s meeting with Professor Woll of the Berlin‑based Hertie School—whom the BJP alleges is involved in anti‑India activities—demonstrates how the opposition engages in foreign interference.
