“What has been implemented?” TVK chief Vijay questions DMK’s 2021 poll promises at Trichy rally

In Tiruchirappalli, Tamil Nadu, TVK chief Vijay kicked off his statewide campaign with a bang on September 13. Speaking to a huge crowd, the actor-turned-politician fired sharp questions at the ruling DMK over its broken promises from the 2021 election manifesto.

Vijay started his speech by drawing on tradition. “In the old days, warriors visited their family deity for blessings before battle,” he said. “Just like that, before diving into this electoral fight, I wanted to connect with my people first.”

He highlighted Trichy’s big role in Tamil Nadu politics and culture. This city is special—former Chief Minister CN Annadurai chose to contest elections here in 1956, and MG Ramachandran held his first political conference in 1974. Trichy stands for religious harmony, cultural heritage, and social justice movements sparked by Periyar, the founder of the Dravidar Kazhagam.

Turning to the DMK’s 2021 manifesto, Vijay grilled them on unkept pledges. “They promised 505 things—how many have they delivered?” he asked. He pointed out key failures like slashing diesel prices by Rs 3, monthly electricity bill calculations, waiving student education loans, 40% job reservation for women in government jobs, restoring the old pension scheme, and filling two lakh government vacancies.

Vijay didn’t hold back on recent scandals either. He slammed the DMK for ignoring real problems, like a kidney theft case at a hospital linked to a party member. On women’s free bus travel, he said it’s a good idea but gets mocked with the word “free,” humiliating riders. The promised Rs 1,000 monthly aid for all women? Still nowhere in sight, and the few who get it are just props for publicity photos, he charged.

But Vijay had a positive vision for his Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK). “We’ll prioritize education, electricity, healthcare, women’s safety, and legal reforms—no shortcuts,” he promised. “TVK will only make realistic commitments, not hot air. Our victory is coming.”

This launch marks TVK’s push as a fresh third front in Tamil Nadu politics, challenging both DMK and AIADMK. Founded in 2024, the party will contest its first Tamil Nadu assembly elections in 2026, aiming to shake up the state’s political scene.
