“He gives strength to face forces of division”: Stalin remembers Mahatma Gandhi, targets BJP on release of postage stamp, coin on RSS’s centenary

In Chennai, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin honored Mahatma Gandhi on his 156th birth anniversary on Thursday. Stalin praised Gandhi for building India’s strong secular foundation, a country where people of all religions live together peacefully.
“Our India welcomes everyone from every faith,” Stalin wrote on X, formerly Twitter. “Mahatma Gandhi planted the seeds of this idea. He gives us the power to fight back against hate and division whenever they try to take root.”
Stalin didn’t hold back his criticism of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, though. He slammed Modi for releasing a special postage stamp to mark the centenary celebrations of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS). The RSS is a Hindu nationalist group, and Stalin linked it to the legacy of Nathuram Godse, the man who assassinated Gandhi.
“On the 100th anniversary of the RSS—the group tied to the killer of our nation’s father—our leaders should pull India back from honoring them with stamps and coins,” Stalin said. “That’s the real promise we should make on Gandhi’s birthday.”
Just a day before, on Wednesday, Modi joined the RSS centenary event as the chief guest at the Dr. Ambedkar International Centre in New Delhi. There, he unveiled the commemorative stamp and coin to spotlight the RSS’s role in India’s history, then spoke to the crowd.
Gandhi, born Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi on October 2, 1869, in Porbandar, Gujarat, led India’s fight for freedom from British rule. He championed non-violent resistance through his ideas of ahimsa (non-violence) and satyagraha (truthful protest), inspiring millions to join the independence movement.
Sadly, Gandhi’s life ended in tragedy. On January 30, 1948, Nathuram Godse shot him at Gandhi Smriti in New Delhi, just months after India gained independence. Gandhi’s legacy of peace and unity continues to shape modern India.
