India’s Supreme Court has eased some restrictions on MLA Abbas Ansari’s interim bail in a Gangster Act case, giving him more freedom to move and live his life.
Justices Surya Kant and Joymalya Bagchi made the changes during a hearing on Ansari’s plea to lift the bail conditions. First, they lifted the ban on Ansari traveling outside Uttar Pradesh. Now, he can head out of state, but he has to share his destination address and trip details with the trial court every time.
The court also let Ansari switch his residence from the current spot in Lucknow. He’ll need to notify local police and the trial court about the new address, though.
Senior advocate Kapil Sibal, representing Ansari, pushed for relaxing another rule that barred public speeches. The justices cleared up the confusion right away: they never meant to silence Ansari completely. As a public figure and politician, he can speak freely on social and economic topics, just like any leader.
But the court drew a firm line—no comments on his ongoing cases, since they’re sub judice and still under judicial review. The goal? Shield the judiciary from social media backlash, which has become all too common. “We’re not gagging him,” the justices told Sibal. “We’re protecting the court from those late-night social media dissections. As a public personality, you can say plenty on other matters—it’s part of public life.”
Sibal argued the restriction had spooked Ansari into avoiding speeches altogether. The court tweaked the rule but kept the ban on discussing his cases intact.
This comes after the Supreme Court granted Ansari interim bail back in March in a case under the Uttar Pradesh Gangsters and Anti-Social Activities (Prevention) Act, 1986. The decision highlights the balance between personal freedoms and legal safeguards in high-profile cases like this.
