Prime Minister Narendra Modi kicked off a whirlwind tour of Northeast India on Saturday, visiting Mizoram, Manipur, and Assam to launch and lay the groundwork for development projects worth thousands of crores. These initiatives aim to boost infrastructure, connectivity, and growth in the region, bringing big changes for local communities.
Modi’s first stop was Aizawl in Mizoram, where he unveiled projects worth over Rs 9,000 crore spanning railways, roads, energy, and sports. A highlight was the inauguration of Mizoram’s first railway line—the Bairabi-Sairang track—which links the state to the rest of India. “This isn’t just a rail connection; it’s a lifeline for transportation,” Modi said. He explained how it would transform lives, helping Mizoram’s farmers and businesses reach markets nationwide.
Bad weather kept Modi at Lengpui airport instead of the main venue, so he addressed the crowd from there and apologized for not joining in person. Starting with a nod to Mizoram’s culture, he said, “I bow to the Supreme God Pathian, who watches over this beautiful land of the Blue Mountains.” He also flagged off three new express trains: the Sairang-Delhi Rajdhani Express, Sairang-Guwahati Express, and Sairang-Kolkata Express. Now, Aizawl has a direct Rajdhani link to the capital!
On the roads front, Modi laid foundation stones for key projects like the Aizawl Bypass Road, Thenzawl-Sialsuk Road, and Khankawn-Rongura Road, promising smoother travel and economic boosts.
From Mizoram, Modi flew to Manipur, landing first in Imphal before heading to Churachandpur. This marked his first visit since ethnic clashes between Meitei and Kuki communities erupted in May 2023, causing widespread damage to the state’s economy, society, and politics. Speaking to various ethnic groups, Modi urged everyone to drop violence and embrace peace. “A new dawn of hope and confidence is emerging in Manipur,” he declared, vowing government support. He met people in relief camps and stressed, “Peace is key to development. In the last 11 years, we’ve resolved many Northeast conflicts through dialogue and understanding.”
In Churachandpur, Modi launched projects worth over Rs 7,300 crore, including the Rs 3,600 crore Manipur Urban Roads and drainage improvement scheme for sustainable city growth. Back in Imphal, he inaugurated initiatives totaling more than Rs 1,200 crore, such as the new Civil Secretariat, IT SEZ Building, Police Headquarters at Mantripukhri, Manipur Bhawans in Delhi and Kolkata, and upgrades to the iconic all-women Ima Markets in four districts.
Wrapping up in Assam, Modi joined celebrations for the 100th birth anniversary of Bharat Ratna Bhupen Hazarika in Guwahati. He called the event “remarkable” and praised the vibrant performances echoing Bhupen Da’s music. Honoring the legendary singer as a champion of India’s unity, Modi said, “Decades ago, amid neglect and violence in the Northeast, Bhupen Da dreamed of a prosperous region. Today, we’re working tirelessly to make that vision real.” He released a commemorative coin and stamp in Hazarika’s honor.
Modi’s Northeast push doesn’t stop here. On Sunday, September 14, he’ll inaugurate projects worth over Rs 18,530 crore in Assam, including a bio-ethanol plant and refinery expansions in Darrang and Golaghat. The next day, September 15, he heads to West Bengal for the 16th Combined Commanders Conference in Kolkata, then to Bihar to open Purnea Airport’s new terminal and launch projects worth Rs 36,000 crore. He’ll also kick off the National Makhana Board to support Bihar’s farmers.
These moves highlight Modi’s focus on Northeast development, peace-building, and infrastructure to connect and empower the region.
