Taiwan’s defense ministry spotted fresh Chinese military moves near its waters early Monday, heightening concerns over cross-strait tensions.
As of 6 a.m. local time, the Ministry of National Defense (MND) tracked eight People’s Liberation Army (PLA) aircraft, eight People’s Liberation Army Navy (PLAN) vessels, and four official ships operating around Taiwan. Six of those aircraft crossed the median line in the Taiwan Strait and flew into Taiwan’s northern, central, southwestern, and eastern Air Defense Identification Zone (ADIZ).
In a post on X (formerly Twitter), the MND shared: “8 PLA aircraft, 8 PLAN vessels and 4 official ships operating around Taiwan were detected up until 6 a.m. (UTC+8) today. 6 out of 8 sorties crossed the median line and entered Taiwan northern, central, southwestern and eastern ADIZ. We have monitored the situation and responded.”
This comes right after similar activity on Sunday. Taiwan’s MND reported detecting 16 PLA aircraft, seven PLAN vessels, and two official ships around its territory as of 6 a.m. that day. Five out of six aircraft sorties breached the median line, entering the northern, southwestern, and eastern ADIZ.
These regular Chinese military incursions and naval patrols underscore the growing strain between Taiwan and China. Taiwan runs its own government with a unique political and economic setup, but Beijing views the island as part of its territory under the One China principle. It insists there’s just one China, with its capital in Beijing.
The roots of this dispute go back to 1949, when China’s civil war ended. The Republic of China government retreated to Taiwan after Mao Zedong’s Communist Party seized control of the mainland. Ever since, China has pushed for reunification through military shows of force, diplomatic isolation, and economic leverage.
Taiwan stands firm on its de facto independence, with strong backing from its people, even as it faces these pressures. The MND keeps a close watch on these activities and shares updates publicly to boost transparency and national security awareness.
