Fit India programme creating greater fitness awareness: PM Modi

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that the Fit India Sundays on Cycle program has played a big role in raising fitness awareness across the country.

During his Sunday broadcast of Mann Ki Baat, Modi praised the effort.

“There are many other competitions that are becoming very popular among our young friends. Many people are coming together to participate in programs like Fit India Sundays on Cycle. These are all ways to promote fitness,” he told listeners in the 128th episode of Mann Ki Baat.

Rajasthan’s Sports Minister, Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore, who hosted the 51st edition of the national cycling drive on Nov. 30 from Jaipur, highlighted the Prime Minister’s ongoing drive to nurture a healthier lifestyle.

“Very few Prime Ministers worldwide issue such clear‑cut demands, stressing the health and well‑being of their citizens. Narendra Modi ji has repeatedly spoken about Fit India,” said Rathore.

He added, “From cutting our oil consumption to promoting millets (shree anna) and actively reducing obesity, our Prime Minister keeps urging us to be fit through yoga, cycling, running and other avenues. The movement sparked by the Sundays on Cycle is a clear illustration of this,” the 2004 Olympic silver medalist noted.

The Fit India Sundays on Cycle began in December 2024, launched under the guidance of Union Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya.

It is now a weekly event that underlines PM Modi’s mantra, “Fitness Ka Dose, Adha Ghanta Roz” and “Fight Against Obesity”.

This initiative has evolved into a genuine grassroots movement, with ordinary people taking a leading role across the country. More than 4,000 NaMo Fit India Cycling Clubs, plus hundreds of thousands of everyday citizens, cycle regularly and join every week, turning the project into a nationwide, community‑led fitness revolution.

The Sports Authority of India (SAI) reinforces this nationwide reach, conducting SoC activities at its network of SAI Training Centres (STCs) in places like Kokrajhar (Assam), Jagatpur and Badal (Punjab), Utlou (Manipur), Kargil (Ladakh), and many others.

In addition, the program runs every Sunday at several Khelo India Centres, including Bhadrak, Jharsuguda and Dhenkanal, as well as at 23 SAI National Centres of Excellence (NCOEs) spread across the country.
