From no ICU to multiple patients on single bed: Tejashwi Yadav flags “deplorable condition” of Bihar govt hospital ahead of PM Modi’s Purnea visit

Tejashwi Yadav Slams Bihar NDA Government Over Poor Hospital Conditions in Purnea

RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav didn’t hold back on Sunday as he criticized the NDA government in Bihar for the shocking state of the Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) in Purnea. During a surprise inspection, he highlighted major problems like the absence of an ICU, patients sharing single beds, and empty doctor positions. This comes just ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Bihar on September 15.

Tejashwi, who leads the opposition in the Bihar Assembly, visited the hospital to expose what he called a "deplorable" healthcare system after 20 years of NDA rule. He targeted Health Minister Mangal Pandey, labeling him "incompetent" and full of empty talk. Sharing videos on X (formerly Twitter), Tejashwi wrote, "Last night, I did a surprise check at GMCH Purnea. See the real mess in Bihar’s healthcare under NDA’s watch."

He stressed that this isn’t some small clinic—it’s a full-fledged medical college. "No ICU, no working trauma center, no cardiology department for heart patients. Toilets are dirty and hard to reach, especially for those with disabilities," he pointed out. In one stark example, he noted three patients crammed on one bed, with bedsheets unchanged for 15-20 days. Cleanliness? Forget it, he said.

The staffing crisis is even worse. Tejashwi revealed that out of 255 approved nurse posts, only 55 nurses work across three shifts—meaning just 18 on duty at any time. If someone takes leave, that number drops further. Over 80% of doctor positions sit vacant, with no permanent dressers and only four OT assistants for the whole place. Many of the 23 departments are shut down, professors are just names on paper, and medical interns haven’t gotten paid for six months.

Tejashwi didn’t stop at the basics. He accused the NDA government of deep corruption in Bihar healthcare, claiming they blow thousands of crores on buildings and equipment just to pocket commissions. "They build fancy structures but skip hiring doctors, nurses, lab techs, and assistants. They buy high-end medical gear for kickbacks but leave it unused without trained staff," he alleged. As a result, around 10,000 patients flock to private hospitals in Purnea every day because government facilities fall short.

With PM Modi’s visit looming, Tejashwi took a sharp dig at the "double-engine" NDA setup—Bihar’s state government and the central one. "Tomorrow, Modi ji visits Purnea to give speeches. Won’t he notice the failures of 20 years in Bihar and 11 years at the center? This is double jungle raj," he said, urging the PM to address corruption, unemployment, poverty, and the crumbling education and health systems.

He even invited PM Modi to tour the GMCH himself. "Please visit this medical college in Purnea tomorrow, and bring Chief Minister Nitish Kumar along—the one in power since 2005. Otherwise, he’ll claim nothing existed before then!" Tejashwi added.

PM Modi’s trip to Purnea includes inaugurating the new Purnea Airport and speaking at a rally in Shishabari village. Expect crowds from Purnia, Katihar, Araria, and Kishanganj districts to show up. Tejashwi’s sharp words have put Bihar’s healthcare woes front and center, sparking debates on government accountability in the state.
