Speaker Biswa Bandhu Sen’s death an irreparable loss: Tripura CM

Tripura Chief Minister Bids Farewell to Former Speaker Biswa Bandhu Sen

Agartala, Dec. 27 – Tripura’s Chief Minister Manik Saha declared the untimely death of former Legislative Assembly Speaker Biswa Bandhu Sen a profound loss for the state. Saha remembered Sen as an exemplary leader whose dedication greatly advanced Tripura’s development.

Sen, a four‑time member of the Legislative Assembly, passed away in a private hospital in Bengaluru on Friday. He had been undergoing treatment for more than four and a half months. His body will be cremated in his hometown of Dharmanagar with full state honors on Sunday.

The chief minister’s office transported Sen’s remains from Bengaluru to Agartala on Saturday. They were then carried to the Legislative Assembly complex on the outskirts of the capital, where legislators and citizens gathered for the final tribute.

Saha, who has known Sen since their college days at MBB College in 1971, spoke of their longstanding friendship. “Whenever he came to Agartala, he would meet me and ask for a cup of tea. I would inquire about his health,” he recalled. “The way he fought the battle of life is beyond words. I used to speak to his children almost every day. But yesterday (on Friday), the painful news came that Biswa Bandhu Sen is no more, which is a great personal loss for me and the people of Tripura.”

Sen’s sudden illness began on the morning of August 8, when he visited Saha at the chief minister’s residence. He later lost consciousness at Agartala Railway Station while heading back to his native Dharmanagar. He was immediately taken to Tripura Medical College Hospital, where doctors found a blood clot in his brain that required urgent surgery. After successful removal, the medical team transferred him to another facility via a green corridor. Two days later, the patient was air‑lifted to a Bengaluru hospital for advanced care at his family’s request.

Beyond his legislative leadership, Saha praised Sen’s broad cultural interests. “He was a wise and prudent person, deeply involved in literature, culture and drama. He was also associated with Jatrapala (traditional open‑air opera) and was a poet,” Saha said. He added that Sen fulfilled his duties as Speaker with utmost devotion and responsibility.

The chief minister expressed heartfelt condolences to Sen’s family, praying for the deceased’s soul and wishing the bereaved strength in their grief.

“It is especially difficult for the people of Tripura to cope with such a profound loss,” Saha said. He stressed that Sen’s legacy would remain in the hearts of all who served under his guidance.

The state will honor Sen with a full state funeral and memorial services, underscoring his enduring impact on Tripura’s political and cultural landscape.
