Mumbai, Dec 13 – The landmark Hindi film Shaan turned 45 this Friday, and actor Dalip Tahil marked the anniversary with a light‑hearted story from director Ramesh Sippy’s studio. He revealed that the memorable shaving sequence in which he is confronted by Amitabh Bachchan was actually his first take in a mainstream Bollywood production.
Celebrating the milestone, Tahil posted on his official Instagram:
"Shaan" completes 45 years today and marks the anniversary of my entry into the movies. (sic)
He followed up with another post:
"Here’s a little fun fact for you all, the shaving sequence in Shaan was the first scene I ever shot in mainstream Bollywood, with none less than Amitji ( @amitabhbachchan ) himself (started with the créme de la créme). Thank you Ramesh Sippy, Bachchan Saab for your patience (Folded hands and flower emoji) #45YearsOfShaan #DT #digiphin," he added.
Produced under G. P. Sippy’s banner Sippy Films and written by the legendary duo Salim–Javed, Shaan was one of the most expensive movies of its era. The cast reads like a who’s‑who of 1980s Bollywood, featuring Sunil Dutt, Shashi Kapoor, Amitabh Bachchan, Shatrughan Sinha, Raakhee Gulzar, Parveen Babi, Bindiya Goswami, Mazhar Khan, and Kulbhushan Kharbanda, among others.
The plot centers on the murder of police officer Shiv (Sunil Dutt). His two con‑man brothers, Vijay (Bachchan) and Ravi (Kapoor), straighten out their ways and team up with sharpshooter Rakesh (Sinha) to hunt down the villainous Shakaal (Kharbanda). The character of Shakaal is widely thought to have been inspired by Ernst Stavro Blofeld from the Bond franchise.
Finally, Shaan holds the distinction of being the last feature film to feature Mohammed Rafi’s singing voice.
