A shocking tragedy in upstate New York has sparked a new murder case. College financial aid advisor allegedly strangled girlfriend, set fire to upstate NY home while she and their 4-day-old son were inside
On the morning of October 18, Buffalo firefighters rushed to an apartment on Norwood Avenue after a blaze broke out at 8:35 a.m. Inside, they found 29‑year‑old Kathleen “Katie” Carrig and her 4‑day‑old son, Noah, unresponsive. Authorities declared both dead on the scene. The boy’s death is still being investigated, but the coroner ruled Carrig’s death a homicide caused by strangulation.
A 30‑year‑old financial‑aid advisor from the University at Buffalo, Kidane Haile, was arrested. Police say he strangled Carrig before setting the house on fire. Haile escaped the flames, received treatment for smoke inhalation, and was later freed from the hospital. He was booked on a charge of second‑degree murder and released into custody without bail.
Erie County District Attorney Mike Keane issued a statement: “We are saddened by the tragic loss of a young mother and her newborn. We have secured an indictment and expect to file additional charges.” The case remains active, and Haile faces a possible sentence of 25 years to life if convicted.
The university did not comment but confirmed it has a disciplinary process for employees involved in criminal acts. The investigation continues, and authorities urge anyone affected to contact the National Domestic Violence Hotline at 1‑800‑799‑SAFE (7233) or text START to 88788.
