CBI Nabs EPFO Official in Delhi for Taking Rs 1.5 Lakh Bribe
In a bold move against corruption, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) caught a senior Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) official red-handed while he accepted a Rs 1.5 lakh bribe in New Delhi. The arrest happened on September 11, 2024, and it highlights the agency’s ongoing fight against graft in government offices.
The official, Jagdish Tambe, serves as the Regional Provident Fund Commissioner-I for Delhi (West) in the EPFO. CBI sources say Tambe demanded the bribe to settle a case in favor of a complainant facing Regional Damage Assessment (RDA) proceedings.
Here’s what went down: On September 9, 2024, the CBI registered a case after the complainant reported Tambe’s demand for Rs 3 lakh as illegal gratification. After some back-and-forth negotiations, Tambe agreed to take half the amount—Rs 1.5 lakh—to wrap up the matter smoothly.
CBI teams set up a trap on September 10 and nabbed Tambe right at the spot as he took the cash from the complainant. "We caught him demanding and accepting the bribe," a CBI statement confirmed. Tambe is now in custody, and the investigation continues to uncover more details.
