President Droupadi Murmu likely to visit Manipur on December 11-12

President Droupadi Murmu is slated to tour Manipur for two days, from December 11 to 12. She will take part in the 86th Nupi Lal Day ceremony at the Nupi Lal Complex in Imphal, according to sources. While the official itinerary is still being finalized, the state is already busy with preparations.

A senior Manipur official noted that no formal schedule has yet arrived from the President’s secretariat in Delhi, but they are on standby to organise security and related arrangements for a VVIP visit. Both sides of the 7‑km stretch from Imphal’s Bir Tikendrajit International Airport to the Nupi Lal Memorial Complex are being repaired, repainted, and festooned with bright flags and signage. Near Keishampat Junction on the airport road, a large welcome banner for the President has already gone up.

Some militant outfits are reportedly calling for a “total shutdown” to protest the President’s visit to the northeast. Besides the Nupi Lal Day observance, she is expected to revisit the memorial on December 12 to pay tribute to the women freedom fighters that the state remembers each year. Nupi Lal commemorates the two women‑led movements in 1904 and 1939 that opposed British colonial policies.

Sources also suggest that the President will head to the Naga‑inhabited Senapati district on December 12 for a programme there. Earlier, during a visit on September 13, Prime Minister Narendra Modi reiterated the Union government’s commitment to “Viksit Bharat” and promised a “Viksit Manipur.” He warned that any violence in Manipur would be unfortunate, given its rich tradition of fighting for justice.

In Imphal, at the historic Kangla Fort, Modi inaugurated 17 infrastructure projects worth ₹1,200 crore, largely from virtual presentations. These include a Manipur Bhawan in New Delhi’s Dwarka, a branch in Kolkata’s Salt Lake City, a new Civil Secretariat, upgraded Police Headquarters, and a Special Economic Zone at Mantripukhri in Imphal West. Four all‑women markets, called Ima Markets, are planned for Tengnoupal, Noney, Pallel, and Moirang.

From the Peace Ground in Churachandpur, a tribal district, Modi also laid foundation stones for 19 development projects totaling ₹7,300 crore across different parts of Manipur.
