When late Dharmendra waited for two hours just to watch Kapil Sharma perform in Toronto

On Dec. 4, Mumbai, a moment of genuine warmth unfolded on the set of Indian Idol Season 16 when Kapil Sharma, the popular comedian, opened up about his lifelong friendship with the legendary Dharmendra. He spoke fondly of the way the veteran actor treated him “like his own son,” remarking, “Unhone hamesha mujhe apna beta mana… Aur unke jaisa na koi tha, na hoga (He always considered me like his own son. There will be nobody like him ever).”
Kapil recalled that while his early gigs were found in local comedy clubs, Dharmendra became his biggest cheerleader—so devoted, in fact, that he once waited almost two hours in Toronto just to catch a rehearsal. That gesture left an indelible mark on the comedian, tightening a bond that stretched far beyond the screen.
He also shared a treasured voicemail from Dharmendra, in which the star blessed his show. “A memory I keep close,” Kapil said, after singing the heartfelt track “Chithi Na Koi Sandesh,” a nod to both his late father and the film icon. His rendition moved viewers and judges alike, and he added, “Poora duniya unse pyaar karti hai (The whole world loves him).”
For those unfamiliar, Dharmendra passed away on Nov. 24 at the age of 89. He had been placed on a ventilator in mid‑November after breathing difficulties, was later discharged, and brought back home for ongoing care.
