SIR exercise in Bengal: ECI directs key officials to closely monitor activities of BLOs

Kolkata, Nov. 6 – A three‑person team from the Election Commission of India (ECI) is in West Bengal to check how the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) is unfolding. The delegation visits three north‑Bengal districts — Cooch Behar, Jalpaiguri and Alipurduar — to ensure voter lists are accurate and complete.

During Thursday’s stop in Alipurduar, Deputy Election Commissioner Gyanesh Bharti, Deputy Secretary Abhinav Agarwal and Principal Secretary S.B. Joshi met with the district’s Electoral Registration Officer (ERO). The meeting also included the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) of West Bengal, Manoj Kumar Agarwal, and local assistant electoral registration officers (AEROs). The team told the officers to keep a tight eye on Booth Level Officers (BLOs) as they work through the revision.

“Let the EROs and AEROs watch the BLOs closely,” the CEO said. BLOs must show their identity badges during house‑to‑house visits and finish their tasks in the time window set for the SIR. The directive also reminds electoral staff not to drop real voters from the rolls and to avoid adding ineligible names, such as deceased, moved, absent or duplicate voters.

The central ECI team will return to Cooch Behar on Friday for a similar review with local electoral officers. The goal is clear: make sure the voter lists in West Bengal are accurate, fair and ready for the upcoming elections.
