NCB meet: HM Shah to set roadmap for ‘Drug Free India @ 2047’ on Sep 16

Union Home Minister Amit Shah is set to kick off a major push against drugs in India. On September 16, he’ll inaugurate a two-day national conference of the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) in New Delhi. The event focuses on the ambitious goal of a ‘Drug Free India @ 2047’, and an official shared these details on Saturday.

During the 2nd National Conference of Anti-Narcotics Task Force (ANTF) Heads from all states and Union Territories, Shah will release the NCB Annual Report-2024. He’ll also launch an online Drug Disposal Campaign to make it easier for people to get rid of illegal substances safely.

Heads of Anti-Narcotics Task Forces from 36 states and Union Territories will join the discussions, along with experts from various government departments. The conference aims to create a clear roadmap to achieve Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of a drug-free India by 2047.

Under the theme ‘United Resolve, Shared Responsibility’, the event will review everyone’s efforts to fight the drug menace. Expect in-depth talks on cutting drug supply, reducing demand, and minimizing harm from drugs. They’ll also discuss how drug trafficking threatens national security and ways to boost drug law enforcement across the country.

The sessions will stress a ‘whole-of-government approach’ to tackle this growing problem. Organizers hope these discussions lead to practical steps forward, building on the strengths of police, communities, and tech experts.

The NCB and state Anti-Narcotics Task Forces are teaming up for a modern fight against drug abuse and trafficking. This includes using technology, sharing intelligence, and involving local communities.

Remember, the Modi government follows a strict ‘zero tolerance policy’ on drugs. Back in 2021, Home Minister Shah instructed all states and UTs to set up dedicated Anti-Narcotics Task Forces. He even launched the first such national conference in April 2023.

Key topics on the agenda include integrated investigation strategies—from top-level coordination to grassroots action—and smart ways to track fugitives and handle foreign offenders.

Special sessions will dive into hot issues like precursors, synthetic drugs, and clan labs; investigations on the dark web and crypto; plus multi-modal tactics used in global drug trafficking. It’s all about equipping India to win the war on drugs for good.
