PM Modi launches Gyan Bharatam Portal, says need to explore past through technology (Ld)

Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched the Gyan Bharatam Portal on Friday, a big step forward in digitizing India’s ancient treasures. This new online platform aims to speed up the preservation of old manuscripts, making them easier to access and study through modern technology.

Modi pointed out how history has been harsh—millions of these precious manuscripts got lost or destroyed over time. But he stressed the urgent need to dig into our past using tech tools to keep that wisdom alive. India still holds the world’s largest collection, with around one crore manuscripts waiting to be explored.

“India isn’t just about borders like modern nations,” Modi said. “We have our own cultural identity, our own soul.” He explained that our history goes beyond kings winning or losing battles—it’s a continuous thread from the Himalayas to the Indian Ocean, even as kingdoms shifted.

Every country treasures its historical gems, Modi noted, treating even a single manuscript like a national pride. India, with its vast wealth of these documents, has every reason to celebrate them. He highlighted how our knowledge tradition thrives on four key pillars: preservation, innovation, addition, and adaptation.

The Gyan Bharatam Mission isn’t just about saving the past—it’s unlocking fresh research and innovation. Modi mentioned the global cultural and creative industry, worth about $2.5 trillion, and how digitized manuscripts can fuel its growth. These ancient texts will act as a massive data bank, sparking data-driven ideas and boosting tech jobs for young people.

As digitization advances, Modi said, it opens doors for academic research too. To make the most of it, we need advanced tools like Artificial Intelligence (AI). AI can help decode these old manuscripts in depth, analyze them thoroughly, and share their knowledge with the world in an authentic way.

Modi called on the youth to jump in and join the Gyan Bharatam Mission. “Explore the past through technology,” he urged, adding that we must make this knowledge available to everyone based on solid evidence. He also encouraged universities and institutes to launch new projects in this area.

Tying it to India’s self-reliant spirit—Swadeshi and Atmanirbhar Bharat—Modi said this mission turns our heritage into a source of strength. It’s the start of an exciting new chapter for India’s future, blending ancient wisdom with cutting-edge innovation.
