Oil India reports natural gas occurrence in Andaman shallow offshore block

Oil India Limited has struck natural gas in a promising new find off India’s Andaman coast. The state-owned energy giant, a key player under the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, announced the discovery from its second exploratory well in the Andaman Shallow Offshore Block.

Drilled under the Open Acreage Licensing Policy, or OALP, the well—named Vijayapuram-2—sits in the Offshore Andaman Block AN-OSHP-2018/1. Early tests confirmed natural gas after samples showed intermittent flow during initial production checks. This marks the first hydrocarbon discovery in OIL’s current exploration push in the block.

The news could boost India’s offshore oil and gas exploration efforts. OIL is now running gas isotope studies to figure out the gas’s origins—whether it’s from a nearby source, a migration route, or a buildup of hydrocarbons. “This might signal a strong lead for hydrocarbon potential, guiding our future drilling and exploration plans,” the company said in a release.

To dig deeper, OIL is also testing nearby higher prospects in the block. The breakthrough comes as India ramps up its search for domestic energy resources to support growing demands.
