On Wednesday, the Digital India BHASHINI division of India’s Ministry of Electronics and IT said it will hold a workshop in Thiruvananthapuram on Saturday, 8 October. The event, called BHASHINI Rajyam Workshop: Kerala Chapter, is the first step toward adding Malayalam, Kerala’s native language, to the country’s AI‑powered digital platforms.
The workshop is a joint effort with the Kerala State IT Mission. Its goal is simple: make government services—everything from health and education to tax filing—available in Malayalam by voice and text. “We want people to use government services without needing to read English,” said the division’s chief, Amitabh Nag.
Key highlights of the event include a signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). The MoU will focus on developing stronger AI models, speech‑recognition systems, and multilingual apps that work in Malayalam. With the left‑hand side tools, citizens can speak or type in their local language and get instant, accurate results.
The workshop will bring together senior policymakers, tech experts, academics, industry reps, and civil‑society members. BHASHINI will demonstrate its voice‑first governance tools, such as the MITRA programme, to show how easy it is to deploy AI solutions.
In addition, the event will launch Bhashini Samudaye, a new initiative that supports state‑level language missions in promoting digital inclusion. Participants will also see Bhashadaan, a citizen‑contribution platform that lets people donate Malayalam voice and text data to train AI models better.
“This is a big win for digital inclusivity,” the ministry said. “By making the digital government eco‑system speak Malayalam, we’re giving everyone in Kerala the same access to services as those who can speak English.”
