Prime Minister Narendra Modi honored freedom fighter Bhagat Singh on his 118th birth anniversary during his monthly radio show, Mann Ki Baat. Speaking in the 126th episode on Sunday, Modi called Bhagat Singh a true inspiration for India’s youth, highlighting his fearless spirit and deep empathy for people’s struggles.
Modi shared how Bhagat Singh, just before his execution, wrote a bold letter to the British demanding treatment like a prisoner of war. He even requested that he and his fellow revolutionaries be shot rather than hanged—a move that showed his sensitivity and courage.
Bhagat Singh was born on September 28, 1907, into a Punjabi Sikh family in Banga village, in what was then Punjab under British India and is now part of Pakistan. From a young age, he dove into India’s independence movement. He briefly joined Mahatma Gandhi’s Non-Cooperation Movement but soon embraced more revolutionary paths.
Under Bhagat Singh’s leadership, the Hindustan Republican Association transformed into the Hindustan Socialist Republican Association (HSRA), which gained huge attention in the fight against British rule and drew sharp public focus. His famous slogan, “Inquilab Zindabad” (Long Live the Revolution), still resonates today. Over time, his ideas shifted from Gandhian nationalism to revolutionary Marxism.
The iconic figure met his end on March 23, 1931, when British authorities hanged him in the Lahore Conspiracy Case at age 23.
Congress leader Mallikarjun Kharge also paid his respects to the martyr on social media platform X. Kharge quoted Bhagat Singh: “The love for the country will not go away from the heart even after death. The fragrance of the country will also come from my soil.” He praised how Bhagat Singh always spoke out against hate, division, and social inequality, with his patriotism rooted in equality and unity—an enduring lesson for all Indians.
