Man accused of raping minor injured in police encounter in Madhya Pradesh

Bhopal, Nov 28 (LatestNewsX) – A man accused of raping a child in Madhya Pradesh was hurt during a quick police encounter near Kirat Nagar when he tried to slip away. The skirmish unfolded after the vehicle carrying the suspect developed a punctured tyre.

Police say the accused, Salman, allegedly seized a firearm from a uniformed officer and began firing. In return, officers shot him in the leg, and he is presently receiving treatment at a government hospital in Bhopal.

Speaking to LatestNewsX, SP Ashutosh Gupta detailed the events that led to the outbreak:

“A six-year-old girl was raped by the accused Salman, who had been absconding. Late last night, following a tip‑off, he was arrested. After his arrest, he attempted to escape,” SP Gupta said.

“During the escape, he began firing at the police. In self‑defence, police also opened fire. He was shot in the leg and is receiving treatment at a nearby hospital.”

Gupta confirmed that a case under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act has been filed against Salman, and another charge for firing at police officers has also been added. He added that search and arrest operations were intensified across various parts of Madhya Pradesh, extending beyond Raisen and its surroundings, which ultimately led to the suspect’s apprehension.

“The accused was known to the minor girl and lived close to her home. As of now, the girl’s condition is stable,” he added.

The six‑year‑old girl was assaulted earlier this week in Raisen, Madhya Pradesh, sparking widespread outrage. Protests erupted on Monday, demanding the swift arrest of the 23‑year‑old accused. The demonstrations involved local road blockades and the participation of Bhilwara MLA Sudhir Verma, eventually prompting police to deploy a lathi charge to disperse the crowd.

In response, Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav criticized the police for failing to secure an immediate arrest. Earlier that Tuesday night, he ordered the removal of Raisen District Superintendent of Police (SP) Pankaj Pandey. Later that same evening, he convened an emergency meeting on law and order at the Police Headquarters (PHQ) in Bhopal, expressing his dissatisfaction with how the police handled the case.
