In Mumbai on December 5, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis announced that Maharashtra intends to upgrade its power distribution grid by adopting a “Digital Twin” approach for solar and other renewable sources. The state’s distribution arm, MahaVitaran, plans to launch an AI‑driven digitisation programme with top global partners, signalling the start of greener, AI‑powered growth in the energy sector. Working with RF and GEAPP, the new platform is expected to set a national standard for power utilities. By integrating AI‑based decision‑support, the state hopes to boost customer experience and strengthen MahaVitaran’s finances. “The tools we’re building will provide lasting, effective help to the distribution network – this is the first Digital Twin for electricity distribution,” the CM added, noting that the initiative should spur major gains in sustainable, eco‑friendly energy, especially for rural areas. He said the technology would deliver more dependable and easier access to power for farmers and rural users. “With world‑class AI systems and direct sector partnership, Maharashtra will roll out digital solutions that enhance power‑flow precision, field operations and energy management,” he explained. A statement from the Energy Department said the move would have a broad sectoral impact, accelerating project decisions, improving grid efficiency and boosting solar use. “Increasing green energy deployment will cut pollution, and even a 1 % reduction in losses could save ₹1,000–1,500 crore a year, shrinking financial gaps,” the department noted. Highlighting the international collaboration, it added that the project could become a key milestone for stabilising supply and elevating service quality in rapidly developing nations such as India. “Maharashtra now has a vital chance to help India realise a sustainable, environment‑friendly, and self‑sufficient energy future,” the release said. Through AI and digitisation, MahaVitaran is positioning the state for modernised infrastructure and a new chapter in power management.
