Bollywood star Akshay Kumar paid a moving tribute to his late dance teacher, veteran actress and dancer Madhumati, on social media.
The actor posted a heartfelt message on October 15 after Madhumati died at age 87. In his note, Akshay said, “My first and forever guru, everything I know about dance I learned at your feet, Madhumati ji. In every move and expression, your memory stays with me. Om Shanti.”
The post also showed two unseen photos. One captured a young Akshay beside Madhumati in a dance class with friends, while the other shows the pair smiling warmly. The images give a rare glimpse of the actor before he became a Bollywood icon.
Madhumati was born in 1938 in a small village near Maharashtra. She started her career dancing in an unreleased Marathi film in 1957 and later appeared in Punjabi, Marathi, Hindi, Bhojpuri and South Indian films during the 1960s. Known for her expressive style and elegance, she was considered a formidable peer of Bollywood’s famed dancer Helen. Her film credits include Railway Platform, Bhagun, and Sharabi Aparadi Kaun.
Other actors also expressed their sorrow. Vindu Dara Singh wrote, “Rest in peace, our teacher and guide, #Madhumati ji. A beautiful life, filled with love and blessings from all who learned dancing from this legend.”
Akshay Kumar began his career as a martial arts instructor in Bangkok and later in Mumbai, where he trained with Madhumati in dance and performance. He broke into Bollywood with the 1991 film Saugandh and later gained fame with hits such as Khiladi, Mohra, and Tu Khiladi Main Anari.
Madhumati’s legacy lives on through the countless dancers and actors she inspired, including the current superstar. Her death marks a sad moment for Bollywood and the dance community.
