At least two killed in shooting at Brown University in US Rhode Island
New York, Dec 14 — According to U.S. media outlets, a shooting at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island, left at least two people dead and several others wounded.
Providence Police posted on X: “Multiple shot in the area of Brown University. This is an active investigation. Please shelter in place or avoid the area until further notice.”
Around 4:20 p.m. Saturday, students received a campus alert about a shooter. The message instructed them to lock doors, silence phones, and remain hidden, reminding them that they should run, hide, or fight only as a last resort, Xinhua reported.
Police said the incident took place near a research area on campus, and officers had already been sent to respond.
U.S. President Donald Trump said he’d been briefed on the situation and that FBI agents had arrived on the scene.
An earlier, unrelated incident saw a student killed and another hurt after a fight that turned violent at a high‑school in North Carolina, the police noted.
Forsyth County Sheriff Bobby Kimbrough told reporters on Tuesday (local time) that a “loss of life” had occurred due to an “altercation” between two students at North Forsyth High. He added that an investigation is proceeding.
The injured student was taken to a hospital, treated, and then released, the sheriff’s office spokesperson confirmed.
North Carolina Governor Josh Stein called the incident “shocking and horrible,” writing on X: “North Carolinians need to be safe wherever they are — especially in schools. We must never stop working toward a safer North Carolina.”
Authorities announced the school would be closed on Wednesday and that crisis counseling would be available for faculty, staff, and students.
