Centre announces UPI with on-device biometric authentication for transactions, more features
In Mumbai on Oct 7, New Delhi’s Ministry of Finance rolled out three fresh UPI upgrades that promise faster, safer, and easier digital payments. At the Global Fintech Festival 2025, Secretary M. Nagaraju unveiled on‑device biometric authentication, an Aadhaar‑based face login for setting or resetting a UPI PIN, and a new way to pull cash from micro‑ATMs using UPI.
On‑device biometric authentication lets users approve UPI transfers simply by unlocking their phone with a fingerprint or facial scan. No more typing a four‑digit PIN for every transaction. The option is opt‑in, so customers can choose the method that feels most secure and convenient to them. Each payment is still verified by the issuing bank with strict cryptographic checks, providing both speed and security.
Aadhaar face authentication streamlines the process of creating or resetting a UPI PIN. Instead of entering debit‑card details or juggling multiple OTPs, users can verify their identity with the UIDAI “FaceRDL” app right inside the UPI‑enabled app. This makes the experience smoother for first‑time users, seniors, and anyone without ready card access, while keeping the process secure.
UPI cash withdrawals at micro‑ATMs open up a new channel for cash access. By linking UPI to micro‑ATMs at Business Correspondent touchpoints, customers can withdraw cash on the spot without waiting for a conventional ATM. This move brings digital and cash payments closer together, expanding financial inclusion in smaller towns and rural areas.
The trio of features reflects the government’s push to modernize India’s digital payment ecosystem, reduce friction, and tighten security for everyday users. With these tools, UPI moves one step closer to becoming the smoothest, most trusted way to pay and withdraw cash across the country.
