Atal Innovation Mission paves the way for 500 new Atal Tinkering Labs in J&K
India’s Atal Innovation Mission (AIM) under NITI Aayog teamed up with the University of Kashmir to launch the ATL Sarthi and Frontier Region Programme on Thursday. The big highlight? Plans for 500 new Atal Tinkering Labs (ATLs) across Jammu and Kashmir, boosting student innovation in the region.
Union Minister Dr. Jitendra Singh, speaking at the event, called Jammu and Kashmir a key player in India’s push toward Destination 2047—a vision for a developed nation by 2047. “As India’s economy climbs from fourth to third globally and beyond, untapped regions like J&K will drive that growth with their unique resources,” he said. He pointed out how the area has gained real focus since Prime Minister Narendra Modi came to power in 2014, with projects like the Aroma Mission unlocking the potential of the Himalayas and rivers.
Dr. Singh sees Jammu and Kashmir stepping up as a major force in India’s innovation story over the next 20 years. He congratulated the ATL Sarthi launch in Srinagar, describing it as a “double win”: Kashmir University now helps integrate J&K into the national growth plan, and AIM expands its innovation network to this border region.
Under the new Frontier Region Programme, these 500 ATLs make up the biggest chunk of 2,500 labs approved nationwide for remote areas, backed by a Rs 100 crore investment. The labs will let school kids dive into cool tech like robotics, 3D printing, and artificial intelligence, sparking creativity and problem-solving from an early age.
Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha of Jammu and Kashmir echoed the excitement, stressing how innovation-focused education can spark inclusive growth. “These Atal Tinkering Labs honor former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee perfectly,” he said. “They give our youth the tools for discovery and self-growth, building skills like problem-solving. By fueling the curiosity of India’s Amrit Generation—the young builders of tomorrow—these labs set the stage for a thriving, ambitious nation.”
