Cholera outbreak kills eight in Pakistan

Islamabad, Dec 13 (LatestNewsX) – Officials in Pakistan’s Balochistan province confirmed that three additional people, six of whom were children, have died from a recent cholera outbreak, bringing the total fatalities over the last three weeks to 12.
The latest toll was recorded in Cheena Khundi, a locality within Musakhel district, where six children and two adult men lost their lives. District Health Officer Abdul Ghaffar Khetran told Xinhua news agency that medical teams from Quetta, Loralai and Barkhan have reached the area, and that medicines were sent following orders from the provincial director general of health.
A local government school has been temporarily converted into a treatment center to address the surge in patients. Health authorities say that at least 14 cholera sufferers are currently receiving care on site.
To identify the source of the infection, officials have taken water samples from the region.
Earlier this year, the Ministry of Health in partnership with the World Health Organization (WHO) launched the National Cholera Control Plan 2025–2028. The strategy aims for a 90 % reduction in deaths by 2030 and seeks to equip the country to spot, respond to, and prevent cholera spikes amid growing climate‑related emergencies.
Between January 2023 and July 2025, Pakistan logged more than 21,000 suspected cholera cases and 250 laboratory‑confirmed cases each year.
WHO defines cholera as an acute disease triggered by consuming the bacteria Vibrio cholerae that contaminates food or water, producing rapidly life‑threatening diarrhoea that demands prompt medical care.
“In Pakistan, cholera is a notifiable endemic illness. The majority of cases are detected in heavily populated metropolitan areas with poor access to clean drinking water, sanitation and hygiene,” the WHO stated in July this year.
