Cohesity’s $1 billion India push to accelerate tech, cybersecurity innovation

In New Delhi, Cohesity, a U.S.-based data‑security software firm that counts Nvidia and SoftBank among its investors, announced a five‑year, $1 billion investment in India. The money is aimed at scaling the company’s engineering capabilities and cementing its foothold in one of the country’s fastest‑growing markets. CEO Sanjay Poonen said the funds will be directed toward expanding technical teams and developing advanced AI tools that help enterprises safeguard and manage data amid growing cyber‑threats. He reiterated that the expansion reflects Cohesity’s dedication to innovation and its confidence in India’s stature as a global technology hub.

Cohesity’s presence in India has already grown dramatically: after acquiring Veritas’s data‑protection business, the workforce nearly tripled from about 700 to roughly 2,200 employees. The company has opened a new engineering centre in Bengaluru to supplement its Pune operations, further deepening its domestic footprint. “Our teams here are building the future of data security and helping customers strengthen their defence against evolving cyber threats,” Poonen added, noting that India is poised to become one of the firm’s top five revenue‑generating regions in the near future.

Customers include major banks, telecom operators, global firms such as Salesforce and Delta Airlines, and Indian IT giants like Infosys. Cohesity’s bold entry into India comes at a time when global interest in deep‑tech and cybersecurity innovation is surging. Just last month, Nvidia joined a group of Indian and U.S. investors supporting the India Deep Tech Alliance, which pledged more than $850 million to back startups in semiconductors, AI, robotics, and space technology. The initiative aims to tackle the long‑term funding gaps that deep‑tech ventures typically face, given their large capital requirements and extended research timelines.

As India’s tech ecosystem shifts toward more sophisticated, innovation‑driven growth, Cohesity’s $1 billion commitment adds momentum to the momentum generated by other major global players expanding their presence in the country. Analysts view the move as consonant with India’s broader ambition to build a robust deep‑tech ecosystem and become a worldwide innovation hub.
