DGCA summons IndiGo CEO Pieter Elbers again amid ongoing flight disruptions

New Delhi, December 11 – IndiGo’s chief executive, Pieter Elbers, has been summoned once more by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) as the domestic flight sector grapples with ongoing disruptions. Earlier this week he sat down with officials to explain what went wrong in one of India’s largest aviation mishaps and to outline a path toward normal operations. This time a four‑person committee will be questioning him.

To dig deeper into the situation, the DGCA has put together an eight‑member special team that will closely monitor IndiGo’s performance. Two of those inspectors will work directly out of the airline’s headquarters, scrutinising daily procedures to spot any gaps that are throwing off flight schedules.

The regulator’s intervention comes against a backdrop of massive cancellations and delays that have clogged major airports across the country, leaving passengers mired in long lines. Amid the chaos, IndiGo indicated that it plans to run more than 1,950 scheduled flights on Thursday, signalling a gradual return to routine.

In a formal statement, an IndiGo spokesperson noted that every route in the airline’s network was fully restored by December 8 and that operations had stabilised since the 9th. “IndiGo continues to strengthen its operations, improving its services day by day to now operating 1,900+ flights that seamlessly connect all 138 destinations across our network,” the spokesperson added.

IndiGo Chairman Vikram Singh Mehta announced that the Board will enlist external technical experts to collaborate with management and pinpoint the root causes of last week’s widespread disruption. The experts will help ensure that a failure of this magnitude never recurs.

Mehta also issued an apology to passengers who were affected by the delays that stretched from December 3 to 5. He acknowledged that thousands were stranded, many missing critical personal events, business meetings, medical appointments, and international connections, while baggage setbacks added to the turmoil. “We are truly, truly sorry,” he said, admitting the airline fell short of its customers’ expectations.

The Chairman explained that the Board initially chose not to release an early statement so that CEO Elbers could concentrate on restoring the flight network. “IndiGo is now operating more than 1,900 flights a day, connecting all 138 destinations, with on‑time performance returning to normal levels,” he concluded.
