Bangladesh’s International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) is set to announce the deadline for its highly‑anticipated verdict against former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who faces accusations of crimes against humanity related to the July‑August 2024 student protests.
The move comes as the banned Awami League threatens a city‑wide shutdown in Dhaka on November 13, the same day the ICT is expected to name a hearing date.
Pankaj Nath, an Awami League leader who currently lives in Barasat, North 24 Parganas, criticized Bangladesh’s Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus for advancing the case against Hasina. He said, “Under the guise of the ICT, they’re trying to punish Sheikh Hasina—an emblem of secular Bangladesh and the spirit of 1971. Removing her from politics would erase democratic hope. This feels like a staged, kangaroo‑court trial with the aim of locking her up.”
Mr. Nath added that Bangladesh has been under threat for the past fourteen months. “Under an illegal, unconstitutional occupation by Dr. Muhammad Yunus, the country’s economy, culture, and political norms have been destroyed. None of us feels secure,” he said. “To protect the people, we need to push Mr. Yunus out and restore stability.”
The situation remains fluid, with the ICT’s decision and potential Dhaka lockdown hinging on the coming days.
