At the start of the ATP Finals in Turin, American Taylor Fritz kicked off his campaign with a decisive 6‑3, 6‑4 win over Italian Lorenzo Musetti. Playing in front of a full Inalpi Arena crowd, Fritz dominated from the baseline, using disciplined strokes and a steady serve to keep Musetti on the defensive.
Fritz, 28, had the advantage of a week’s preparation inside the indoor arena while Musetti arrived on Sunday after a late‑night loss to Novak Djokovic in Athens. From the first point, Fritz grabbed the ball early, redirected pace, and left the Italian scrambling. Musetti showed flashes of brilliance, but most of the match saw him retreating, unable to mount an effective counter‑attack to Fritz’s flat, penetrating groundstrokes.
“I’m really happy,” Fritz said after the match. “I think I did a lot of things very well, especially my serve in the early stages. I saved a few break points and then played the second set consistently, even though I didn’t get the chances to break that I had.”
With a performance rating of 9.20, well above the 2025 tour average of 8.28, Fritz moved to a 1‑0 record in the Jimmy Connors group. He will face fellow favorites Carlos Alcaraz and Alex de Minaur in the upcoming round‑robin matches. Alcaraz, who beat de Minaur on Sunday, is chasing his first Nitto ATP Finals crown and the year‑end No. 1 ranking.
This win comes after a strong season for Musetti, who earned his place at the year‑end event by reaching tour‑level finals in Monte‑Carlo, Chengdu, and Athens. Joining him in Turin is countryman World No. 2 Jannik Sinner, who will start his campaign against Felix Auger‑Aliassime on Monday night.
