Himachal Pradesh Battles Monsoon Chaos: Roads Blocked, Power Out, and Death Toll Hits 386
Shimla, Himachal Pradesh – The relentless 2025 monsoon rains have thrown Himachal Pradesh into turmoil, leaving roads blocked, power lines down, and communities isolated. On Friday evening, the State Disaster Management Authority (SDMA) shared an update that paints a grim picture of the damage.
According to the latest SDMA report at 6 pm, heavy rains have shut down 500 roads across the state, including three key national highways. On top of that, 953 electricity distribution transformers (DTRs) are out of action, and 336 water supply schemes have been hit hard. These disruptions stem from non-stop downpours, landslides, and flash floods that keep wrecking infrastructure.
The tragedy deepens with the monsoon death toll now at 386. Officials say 218 people died from direct rain-related disasters like landslides, flash floods, and collapsing homes. Another 168 lost their lives in accidents on rain-slicked roads. The overall economic blow? A staggering ₹4,500 crore in losses, as per state authorities.
Restoration teams are working around the clock, but progress is slow. Small vehicles can now navigate some partially cleared routes, yet heavy trucks and buses face bans in many spots. Remote villages in several areas remain completely cut off, making relief efforts tough.
The hardest-hit districts include Kullu, Mandi, and Chamba, where road blockages and infrastructure damage run deep. In Kullu, more than 170 roads are closed, and over 500 transformers are faulty. Mandi reports over 130 blocked roads and 250 down transformers. Even Shimla isn’t spared, with major glitches in its water supply systems.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) isn’t letting up on warnings either. They’ve issued a yellow alert for more rain, cautioning that fresh showers could slow down repairs and spark new dangers in landslide-prone zones.
Local authorities are pleading with residents: Stay put if you can, and skip unnecessary trips through risky areas. As Himachal Pradesh grapples with this monsoon fury, the focus stays on getting essentials like power, water, and roads back online for everyone affected.
