‘It’s a good sign’: Leaders on PM Modi, Trump reviewing India-US strategic partnership progress

New Delhi, Dec 12 – Several senior politicians welcomed Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s phone call with U.S. President Donald Trump, saying the discussion reinforced the India‑U.S. relationship and laid the groundwork for potential trade gains.

BJP MP Shashank Mani Tripathi told reporters that the two countries are close friends and that while tariff disputes have caused misunderstandings, a solid trade deal would benefit everyone, boost the economy, and help curb inflation. Rajkumar Chahar, also a BJP MP, added that Modi makes any decision that best serves India and its 1.4 billion people, whether it involves talks with Trump, Putin, or other partners.

Shiv Sena’s Priyanka Chaturvedi welcomed the continued strengthening of ties between the two major democracies, stressing the need to finalize a trade agreement. She pointed out that U.S. tariffs are worrisome, but hopes ongoing dialogue will resolve the issue quickly. Meanwhile, TDP MP Lavu Sri Krishna Devarayalu noted that India’s 8.2 % growth rate is attracting U.S. interest, and that cooperation should be balanced so that neither side gains an overwhelming advantage.

During the call, Modi and Trump highlighted the importance of maintaining momentum in joint efforts to expand bilateral trade. “Had a very warm and engaging conversation with President Trump. We reviewed the progress in our bilateral relations and discussed regional and international developments. India and the US will continue to work together for global peace, stability and prosperity,” PM Modi posted on X after the phone call. They reviewed the evolution of the India‑U.S. Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership and expressed satisfaction with the steady strengthening of cooperation across all sectors.

Both leaders also touched on deepening collaboration in critical technologies, energy, defense, security, and other priority areas central to the India‑U.S. COMPACT—Catalyzing Opportunities for Military Partnership, Accelerated Commerce & Technology—for the twenty‑first century. They agreed to work closely on regional and global issues to address shared challenges and advance common interests.
