Maha aims to become pumped storage hub: CM Fadnavis

Nagpur, Dec 10 (Indian News Service) – Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis announced Wednesday that Maharashtra is positioning itself as a major powerhouse for pumped‑storage electricity. He revealed that the state’s pumped‑storage capacity now stands at 76,115 MW.

During the event, several memorandums of understanding were signed in the CM’s presence. Fadnavis explained that the agreements today will contribute an extra 5,800 MW to the grid, bring in ₹23,800 crore of investment, and create roughly 11,500 jobs.

The government’s release noted that a total of 54 MoUs have already been inked for pumped‑hydro projects around the state. The new contracts will boost generation by 5,800 MW. Among these, the Western Ghats Pumped Storage Project is expected to be the country’s largest.

Fadnavis added that the cumulative output from all 54 MoUs will reach 76,115 MW, attract an overall investment of ₹4.06 lakh crore, and produce about 125,000 jobs. “The state’s policy for developing Pumped Hydroelectric Projects through Public‑Private Partnership (PPP) was issued on 20 December 2023. Today’s MoUs were signed in accordance with this policy,” he said.

He continued, “Maharashtra leads the nation in pumped‑storage potential. The Western Ghats and our extensive dam network provide an exceptionally favorable setting for these projects. Central government support is accelerating progress, and these schemes will be key to smoothing out renewable intermittency.”

Fadnavis assured that all state agencies will coordinate closely to bring the projects to completion as quickly as possible.
