Meghalaya second fastest growing economy in India: CM Sangma

Guwahati, Dec 10 (LatestNewsX) – Meghalaya’s economy is advancing at a brisk pace, ranking second only to Tamil Nadu in nationwide growth, said Chief Minister Conrad Sangma on Wednesday.

At Ward’s Lake in Shillong, Sangma opened the fourth edition of the Tri Hills Ensemble, a festival that spotlights the craft, culture, and cuisine of the Khasi, Jainti and Garo communities. In his speech, the chief minister lauded the Department of Arts & Culture for bringing the state back to its roots, showcasing our heritage to the world and safeguarding the identity of our people.

He stressed that while Meghalaya reaps rapid economic gains, cultural preservation must stay at the core of development. “The theme this year, “Rivers, Roots, and Revival,” reminds us to rediscover neglected traditions such as the rowing and boating contests once held in Dawki and beyond,” Sangma said.

The chief minister called for more systematic recording of tribal histories, languages, rituals, dance styles and migration patterns. “In Garo culture alone, there are multiple drum beats and different steps for the Wangala that only drummers can distinguish, but there is no documentation,” he noted, urging further research through initiatives like the Chief Minister’s Research Grant.

He encouraged schools to put on plays featuring Meghalaya’s own heroes—Tirot Sing, Kiang Nongbah and Pa Togan Sangma—to foster pride and unity among young people. He ended by hoping for stronger cultural exchanges and expressing his best wishes to all participants and awardees.

Meanwhile, Minister of Arts & Culture Sanbor Shullai highlighted that the festival celebrates the enduring heritage of Khasi, Jainti and Garo peoples, honouring their culture, language, music, cuisine and craftsmanship. He explained that the Meghalaya Arts and Heritage Awards recognize both master artisans and innovative young talents who preserve identity and demonstrate new excellence.

Shullai also acknowledged ongoing cultural research and documentation projects, including the Chief Minister’s Research Grant, which safeguards cultural knowledge for future generations. When discussing the revival of traditional boat races, he described it as a return to a heritage that brings together men, youth, performers, artisans and organizers in a shared effort to keep culture alive.
