Mentorship to shape India’s next generation of startups from smaller towns: Minister

New Delhi, Dec 7 (LatestNewsX) – Union Minister Dr Jitendra Singh said on Sunday that India has gone from a situation where science learning was only available to a small, privileged group to a phase where chances are becoming more “democratised”. He highlighted that this shift lets talent from lesser‑known towns and modest families dream of starting their own businesses.

The minister stressed that guidance and support, more than just capital, will determine the next wave of startups. While speaking with entrepreneurs and students at the India International Science Festival (IISF), he called for stronger mentorship, bolder experimentation in research, and early‑stage assistance for fledgling innovators.

During a panel session, Dr Singh explained that the government’s attention has moved from merely drafting policies to actively creating ecosystems that bridge ideas with market realities. He cited ongoing work within the science and technology ministries to set up organized platforms such as BIRAC, national missions, and sector‑specific programs. These structures help startups connect with investors, industry partners, and mentors.

Acknowledging that innovation naturally involves setbacks, he urged the country to embrace risk in research and development. According to him, only if startups are willing to accept uncertainty can they grow and compete on the global stage.

The minister pointed to scientific breakthroughs that have reshaped daily life in India. He mentioned progress in healthcare technology and biotechnology that were once only accessible abroad, and added that the nation is not just copying global solutions but developing its own original ideas across sectors—from life sciences to digital platforms.

Dr Singh also warned that a clear vision and the right skill set are essential before launching a venture. He argued that early mentorship helps young innovators gauge their strengths, refine concepts, and steer clear of common mistakes.

Referencing government programmes, he noted that initiatives aimed at students—especially girls—are expanding to spot talent early and offer structured guidance.

The government has been steadily reducing red tape, simplifying licensing, and decriminalising certain activities to lessen the burden on entrepreneurs. These reforms, he added, are meant to free startups to focus on innovation instead of paperwork while maintaining accountability.
