Urban mobility planning in tier 2 and 3 cities must begin now: Manohar Lal

New Delhi, Nov 9 () – India’s Union Minister for Housing and Urban Affairs, Manohar Lal, urged planners in tier‑2 and tier‑3 cities to start urban mobility projects now. “We need to act today so that when these cities grow into tier‑1 hubs they already have smart, future‑ready transit systems,” he told attendees at the three‑day Urban Mobility India Conference (UMI 2025) in Gurugram.

Lal also called for spreading the Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS) beyond the Delhi‑NCR corridor to other major metros such as Chennai, Mumbai and Bengaluru. He stressed that stronger regional links could cut travel time between city clusters and ease congestion.

During the conference’s closing ceremony, the minister launched the new PM e‑Bus Sewa logo and website, announced the next UMI meeting in Bhubaneswar (Oct 23‑25, 2026), and highlighted key take‑aways from the event. He suggested that metro authorities consider premium or luxury seats for higher‑income riders, aiming to make public transit more inclusive and financially sustainable.

The three‑day event celebrated achievements in urban transport. Chennai topped the awards with Best Public Transport System, Udaipur earned Best Non‑Motorized Transport System, and Aizwal received a Special Award for its traffic management in Mizoram.

More than 1,600 delegates from eight countries joined the conference, while 170 speakers shared insights across panels. Exhibitions hosted 25 exhibitors showcasing the latest mobility solutions. The gathering underscored India’s push to build swift, reliable, and future‑proof transportation networks across the country.
