Multiple political conflicts threaten stability in Bangladesh: Report

Dhaka, Dec 13 (LatestNewsX) – With the upcoming parliamentary vote looming, Bangladesh is witnessing a surge of clashes that span party lines, split factions, and the broader political arena. These tensions threaten to destabilize the country and pose a formidable test for the Muhammad Yunus‑led interim authority charged with running a calm and credible election, a report said on Saturday.

The report noted that, because Sheikh Hasina’s Awami League has been barred from competing, a sudden void in the political landscape could spark renewed hostilities between the Long‑term opponents Bangladeshi Nationalist Party (BNP) and Jamaat‑e‑Islami (JI). “Although the two groups once found common cause in opposing Hasina, they are now scrambling for power and influence. Their rivalry could deepen instability as they battle for post‑Hasina dominance, and internal splits within the BNP and JI may further inflame unrest,” the piece outlined, citing an analysis from The Diplomat.

The interim administration has also been rocked by waves of protests demanding earlier reforms, and sharp fissures have emerged over the best timing for final elections. For months, Yunus had avoided setting a firm timetable, drawing harsh criticism from numerous parties. When he eventually announced a June 2026 date, mounting pressure forced him to bring the election forward first to April, then ultimately to February 2026.

In contrast, the Awami League – led by Hasina – rejected the new timetable, asserting that Yunus’s government cannot guarantee a free and fair poll. The report warned that recent developments keep Bangladesh’s political situation volatile, with the danger of widespread unrest increasing.

“Hasina’s son and key advisor, Sajeeb Wazed, previously stated that Awami League supporters would take to the streets and block the elections if the ban on his mother’s party was not overturned in time for the February elections,” the article said. Wazed, claiming to be in touch with all party leaders and activists nationwide, warned of massive protests and potential clashes. He asserted that the party’s “hundreds of thousands of activists” and “millions of supporters” were prepared to mobilise.

These intimidation threats add another layer of complexity to an already fraught political environment. “With political divisions growing deeper and the Awami League’s warning of confrontation adding further volatility, the interim government’s ability to maintain law and order, mediate between rival factions, and ensure a peaceful electoral process will be crucial in preventing the situation from spiraling further into chaos,” the report added.
