Frankfurt, Germany – As the 80th United Nations General Assembly kicks off, Shafi Burfat, chairman of the Jeay Sindh Muttahida Mahaz (JSMM), has fired off an open letter calling on world leaders to spotlight Pakistan’s harsh treatment of its ethnic minorities and independence movements.
In the letter, Burfat blasts Pakistan for relying on religious tricks to crush groups like the Sindhis, Baloch, Pashtuns, Saraikis, and Brahuis. He argues these communities have faced political exclusion, economic drain, and cultural wipeout for years under what he calls a rigged system.
Burfat points out that ethnic Punjabis dominate Pakistan’s military, intelligence agencies, and diplomatic scene, leaving other groups feeling like they’re under occupation – a kind of modern-day slavery, in his words.
He levels tough charges too, including enforced disappearances, torture, and government-backed attacks on activists, journalists, and ordinary citizens pushing for change. Dissenters often get branded as terrorists and shut down with violence, Burfat says.
The letter also slams Pakistan for erasing indigenous languages, histories, and cultures while fueling religious extremism and terrorism at home and abroad to advance its own agenda.
Burfat urges UN leaders to rethink letting Pakistan join global talks without facing real scrutiny, saying it just props up the oppression. He pushes for two big steps: recognizing self-determination rights for these ethnic nations in Pakistan, and stopping the habit of labeling their freedom movements as terrorist groups. Plus, he wants international courts to hold the culprits accountable for these alleged atrocities.
