Bhubaneswar, Oct 14 – Senior Member of Parliament Sujeet Kumar announced that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is planning to field Jay Dholakia as its candidate for the upcoming bye‑election in the Nuapada Assembly constituency in Odisha.
According to Kumar, the BJP will reveal the name of its candidate by the evening of Tuesday. Dholakia is expected to file his nomination on October 16. “Myself, along with ministers, MLAs and MPs from the BJP will camp in Nuapada,” Kumar said. “Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi will lead the campaign. On October 16 we will hold a grand joining programme in Nuapada, where more than 2,000 workers and leaders from the BJD and Congress will join us. We will file the nominations that same day,” he added.
The rally on October 16 is expected to draw over 40,000 BJP workers and supporters. Chief Minister Majhi, Odisha BJP president Manmohan Samal and other senior leaders will also be present.
When asked about concerns from some BJP cadres over Dholakia’s candidacy, Kumar said the party remains united. “Everyone has resolved to work together for a BJP win. We’re confident we will beat our rivals by more than 50,000 votes,” he said.
The Election Commission of India issued a gazette notification for the bypoll on Monday, outlining the schedule. The Nuapada seat fell vacant after the death of former Odisha minister Rajendra Dholakia on Sept. 8. Nomination papers can be submitted until Oct. 20. Scrutiny of nominations will take place on Oct. 22, after which candidates may withdraw by Oct. 24.
The bye‑election will be held on Nov. 11, with vote counting set for Nov. 14. Congress has already named veteran tribal leader Balabhadra Majhi as its candidate. The BJP and BJD still have not officially announced their nominees.
