Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha shared some upbeat news from the state’s bustling Maharajganj market on Wednesday, saying the latest GST reforms have everyone—from shoppers to shopkeepers—smiling. These changes, aimed at cutting taxes on everyday goods, kicked in just two days earlier and are already making a big difference.
Saha joined a local campaign in Agartala’s main commercial spot to promote the GST updates. He chatted with traders and buyers, and the vibe was all positive. “People are thanking Prime Minister Narendra Modi for slashing prices on essential items,” Saha noted. Folks at the market expressed real gratitude for how these reforms ease the burden on basic needs like food and household supplies.
The reforms stem from directives by PM Modi, with Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman rolling them out on September 22. Saha highlighted how GST has evolved since its rocky start in 2017. Back then, businesses juggled multiple taxes—think factory duties, road taxes, VAT, and extra fees for moving goods across states. It all felt chaotic at first.
Now, things are simpler: GST slabs dropped from five to just two, targeting lower rates for common products. Saha pointed out that critics once warned these tax changes would tank India’s economy. Instead, the country climbed from 11th to 4th in global rankings.
Looking ahead, Saha praised Modi’s push for a developed India, or Viksit Bharat, by 2047. “India could lead the world economy by 2050 or beyond,” he said, crediting steady reforms for the growth. With happier markets and stronger finances, Tripura and the nation seem on track for brighter days.
