On Thursday, Tripura’s Chief Minister Manik Saha met with officials from the state‑owned Tripura Tea Development Corporation (TTDC) and urged the organization to become financially sustainable while rolling out focused job‑creation plans.
He also highlighted Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s “vocal for local” push, calling for a stronger push to market Tripura’s tea inside the state. During the TTDC review session at the civil secretariat, the chief minister noted that Tripura tea matches any other variety in flavor and aroma, and stressed the importance of preserving its natural qualities through extensive marketing. He pointed out that selling the tea in tea‑free states could boost earnings.
Industry and Commerce Secretary Kiran Gitte reported that the state produced 9 million kilograms of tea in 2024. TTDC manages five gardens, while 13 gardens operate under cooperatives and 36 are privately owned. Gitte also mentioned that 2,800 small tea farmers rely on the industry and that the Chief Minister’s Tea Workers Welfare Scheme has upgraded their living standards. Under this scheme, the daily wage for tea garden workers has risen from ₹105 to ₹204.
Other key attendees at the meeting were Industries and Commerce Minister Santana Chakma, TTDC Chairman Sameer Ranjan Ghosh, Chief Secretary J. K. Sinha, Secretary to the Chief Minister Pradeep Kumar Chakraborty, Finance Secretary Apurba Roy, TTDC Managing Director Subrata Kumar Das, and several other officials.
