PM SVANidhi scheme brings new hope to street vendors in Chamoli
Chamoli, Dec. 27 – The Pradhan Mantri Street Vendor’s AtmaNirbhar Nidhi (PM SVANidhi) has been working its magic on the outskirts of Uttarakhand’s remote district of Chamoli. More than 600 residents have tapped the scheme’s low‑interest, collateral‑free loans and found new ways to keep their families fed.
After the lockdowns that crippled informal employment, many street traders saw their stalls shuttered and incomes fall to almost nothing. The municipal corporation stepped in to identify those most in need and guided them through the PM SVANidhi application process. Thanks to the central government’s support, applicants now receive their funds within days instead of weeks, giving them the breathing room to restart or expand their businesses.
“Knowing that the government understands our struggle has given us a new lease on life,” said beneficiary Birendra Singh Rana, whose tea shop had been closed for months. “I applied at the municipal office, submitted my documents, and got the loan approved. With the money I opened a small tea stall, and now I earn a steady income.”
Another resident, Anil Singh Rana, echoed the sentiment. “PM SVANidhi is a huge step toward self‑reliance, especially for the youth who feel stuck on the sidelines,” he said. “It allows us to start businesses without worrying about securing collateral.”
Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s initiative is aimed at giving street vendors the confidence to reinvest in their livelihoods. By removing barriers such as collateral and high interest, the scheme has become a lifeline for those who make a living on city streets, roadsides, and small urban plots.
The Chamoli residents testify that the loans not only improve their financial stability but also restore their dignity. “Today we are not just surviving; we are thriving,” the beneficiaries added, expressing heartfelt gratitude to the central government for turning a promise into a tangible reality.
