Privacy protection in-built in Poshan app for Anganwadi centres: MoS Savitri Thakur

New Delhi, Dec 5 – Minister of State for Women and Child Development, Savitri Thakur, answered a question in the Lok Sabha by explaining that the Poshan Tracker app, used in Mission Poshan 2.0 to monitor nutrition at Anganwadi centres, comes equipped with a range of data‑protection measures.

She clarified that the Saksham Anganwadi and Mission Poshan 2.0 initiatives have tapped IT systems to boost transparency and streamline nutrition delivery. Among the safeguards highlighted, the app is accessed only by authorised Anganwadi workers; it isn’t open to the public or to unauthorised users. Role‑based permission controls are in place, with every access being logged and monitored to guard against misuse.

By the end of November, 8.95 lakh Anganwadi workers nationwide had received training to use both the Poshan Tracker and its dashboard. Thakur added that the technology behind the tracker helps identify stunting, wasting and under‑weight among children on the fly. It also supports almost real‑time data capture for a range of services—such as opening and closing times of centres, daily attendance, and growth monitoring.

On security, the minister noted that the application’s internal database is encrypted, which keeps sensitive information out of reach of anything beyond the app environment. “The data of the beneficiary, which is collected, is subject to all existing data protection protocols, which mandates purpose limitation, informed consent, and access restrictions,” she said.

All face‑verification exchanges are encrypted during transit, preventing interception or tampering. No images or data linger permanently on the device; any cached or temporary information is wiped automatically when an Anganwadi worker logs out, ensuring private data remains inaccessible to the public. Face images are processed in an encoded format within the app to keep the transfer secure.

Mission Saksham Anganwadi and Mission Poshan 2.0 are centrally sponsored schemes with implementation responsibilities delegated to states and union territories. The programmes are open‑access, meaning anyone eligible can sign up and receive services without barriers.

The Ministry, through the Savitri Bai Phule National Institute of Women and Child Development, has organised training for a variety of stakeholders on using the Poshan Tracker app and its dashboard. Grievance redressal is built into Poshan 2.0; workers can log concerns directly through the app or dashboard. An additional channel is the Poshan Helpline (1515), launched in November 2022, which accepts complaints from Anganwadi staff. The line operates in 17 languages, allowing workers to report issues related to the application.
