U.S. media outlets see Vladimir Putin’s arrival in New Delhi as a critical point in India’s foreign‑policy strategy, focusing on how Prime Minister Narendra Modi is trying to uphold a tight bond with Moscow while also feeling pressure from Washington.

The Washington Post called the trip a “delicate diplomatic challenge,” noting that Modi must keep his promises to Russia without stirring up Donald Trump, who has already punished India for importing cheap Russian crude and for “fueling its ‘war machine’ in Ukraine.”

The Post added that Indian refineries are trimming Russian oil purchases as U.S. and European sanctions get tougher, a cut that analysts view as a “significant blow” to Moscow’s war funding.

The New York Times highlighted the image of Modi greeting Putin on the tarmac, describing it as a sign of the “strong personal rapport” between the two leaders amid a tense geopolitical climate.

It reported that India is looking for ways to untangle its economic ties with the Trump administration, which has accused New Delhi of helping finance Russia’s war by buying heavily discounted crude.

The Times listed trade, defence supplies, nuclear cooperation, fertilisers, and a proposed labour‑mobility pact among the top items on the summit agenda.

The Wall Street Journal offered one of the sharpest take‑aways, suggesting that Putin’s visit is meant to “protect a partnership that is a crucial economic and diplomatic lifeline for Moscow but one that has drawn the ire of the Trump administration.”

It noted that Trump has slapped 50 percent tariffs on Indian exports as a penalty for India’s large‑scale Russian oil purchases. The paper said India will likely cut imports to about one million barrels a day this month—from 1.8 million barrels a day in November—because of new U.S. sanctions on Rosneft and Lukoil.

The Journal also mentioned that Putin is expected to propose “cheap oil and Russia’s latest arms” to strengthen ties, even though Indian officials have quietly signalled that major new defence deals are unlikely. Analysts quoted in the piece suggested India could use Russia’s offers to leverage discussions with Washington, given a U.S. law that sanctions countries buying large defence platforms from Moscow.

Despite hesitations about imminent arms agreements, the journal maintained that “the trajectory of the relationship is upward,” with both nations keen to expand trade beyond energy.

CNN zeroed in on the Ukraine angle. Just before arriving in Delhi, Putin told India Today that Russia would “liberate Donbas and Novorossiya… by military or other means,” adding that they would finish when the goals set at the start of the special military operation were met and the territories were freed.

CNN linked those remarks to his meeting in Moscow with U.S. envoy Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner earlier in the week, noting that Trump later called the talks “a perfect meeting” but conceded that “it does take two to tango.”

Throughout major U.S. outlets, the visit is portrayed as a test of India’s strategic autonomy—its bid to keep robust relations with Russia, its primary arms supplier, while building a rapidly growing security partnership with the United States.

The Washington Post said New Delhi wants to assure Moscow that “the fundamentals of the relationship remain strong,” even as India adjusts to global energy market changes and U.S. retaliation over Russian imports.

India and Russia have kept a close strategic partnership since the Cold War, built on defence cooperation, energy trade, and multilateral alignment. Russia remains India’s largest source of military equipment, although the country has diversified its procurement in recent years.

The United States is now India’s biggest trading partner and has deepened strategic ties with New Delhi in the face of China’s rise.

Putin’s trip comes amid heightened global tension, with U.S.–Russia friction over Ukraine and shifting oil flows placing India at the heart of a complex geopolitical rebalancing.
